With storage in Mettur reservoir dwindling and delta region awaits water for the standing samba crop, Tamil Nadu chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami and ministers of delta districts have decided to meet Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah in Bengaluru to seek Cauvery water for the state.
A decision to this effect was taken at a high-level meeting convened by Palaniswami at secretariat on Tuesday. “It has been decided that the chief minister and ministers from the delta districts will visit Bengaluru and urge the Karnataka chief minister to release water to save samba crop for the welfare of the farmers,” said an official release said.
The state government wrote letters and made a telephonic calls to Karnataka chief secretary and principal secretary to the chief minister seeking an appointment with Siddaramaiah.
As on Tuesday morning, the Mettur reservoir, the lifeline of Cauvery delta districts, has the storage of 14.29tmcft (thousand million cubic feet) as against the total storage capacity of 93.27tmcft, sources say. The sluices were closed on January 28, as is the customary date. The reservoir was opened on October 2, four months behind the schedule for the irrigation, due to delay of water release by Karnataka and poor monsoon
