Opposition parties say their workers terrorised by TMC
More than 70% votes were polled in the crucial bypolls held for the Uluberia Lok Sabha constituency in Howrah district and Noapara Assembly seat in North 24 Paraganas on Monday.
“Till 5 p.m., 76% votes were polled in Uluberia while Noapara recorded a polling of 75.4% votes,” a senior Election Commission official said. The polls were by and large peaceful and no major incidents of violence took place.
“We have not received any complaints of large-scale violence. As for other complaints received during the day, appropriate action was initiated,” the official told The Hindu.
The Opposition parties, however, alleged that the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) resorted to “large-scale rigging and violence” to terrorise the voters and workers of rival parties. TMC leadership denied the allegations.
“TMC’s strong-arm tactics made the Uluberia bypoll a farce. Five of our workers have been hospitalised in critical condition after they were assaulted by the TMC goons,” BJP State president Dilip Ghosh said. CPI(M) candidate in Uluberia Sabiruddin Molla alleged that his party workers were attacked by TMC workers since Sunday night and at least 15 of them were injured.
