Uncertainty over government special buses for Pongal festival continued as ticket reservation counters were not open on Tuesday morning, as announced earlier.
Though computers and ticket printing machines were kept ready at the pre-booking counters in CMBT (Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus), Tambaram and Poonamallee, operations were yet to begin. People who arrived at CMBT on Tuesday morning to book tickets returned home disappointed. Consequently, the demand for private omnibuses has shot up for the festival weekend and operators have increased their fare by up to 200%.
With more than one lakh employees of the state transport department on strike demanding wage revision, the government was trying to rope in as many drivers (with adequate experience to operate on long routes) as possible to run the special buses, said a senior transport department official. On Wednesday last, transport minister MR Vijayabaskar announced that more than 27,000 special buses would be operated during the second week of January in view of the Pongal festival.
