India’s ace shuttler PV Sindhu will be the country’s flag-bearer at the opening ceremony of 21st Commonwealth Games, to be held at Gold Coast.

According to reports, Sindhu was chosen by the Indian Olympic Association to lead the line.

This is the first time, in the last three editions of CWG, that a female athlete has been chosen to lead the Indian contingent.

Sound decisionSindhu the right pick for India

The decision taken by the IOA appears to be a sound one.

Sindhu deserves to be the flag-bearer in the prestigious Games, given her achievements in recent past.

The shuttler has been in tremendous form since she won the silver medal at the 2016 Rio Games.

Sindhu, who won a bronze in the previous CWG, will look to better the feat this time around.

She won two Super Series titles, the Indian and the Korean Open, in 2017.

Sindhu also bagged the gold in Syed Modi International Grand Prix Gold in the same year.

She finished as a runner-up at the World Championships in 2017 besides also winning the silver in the Super Series Finals.

In the 2018 All England Open, she reached the semi-finals.

India’s flag-bearers in the past

At the 2006 CWG held in Melbourne, Olympic silver medallist and Sports Minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore was the flag-bearer. In 2010, Olympic gold medallist shooter Abhinav Bindra led the line. He was followed by another Olympic medallist shooter, Vijay Kumar in 2014 Glasgow Game
