A Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader escaped a militant attack in Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday, but his personal security officer (PSO) was injured in the incident, the police said.

Militants fired upon Anwar Khan, a BJP leader, at Balhama in Pulwama district, a police official said.

While Khan escaped the attack unhurt, his PSO, constable Bilal Ahmad, was injured in the incident, he added.

Leader in Kashmir escaped unhurt on Thursday when suspected militants fired at him on the outskirts of Srinagar but one of his security officers sustained “minor injuries”, police said.

As security forces cordoned off a village in the Khunmoh area in search of the militants, a gun-fight erupted which was continuing, police added.

A BJP spokesperson said Mohammad Anwar Khan, the general secretary of the party’s Baramulla district, was not injured.

One of his security officers, Bilal Ahmad, received a “grazing (bullet) injury on one leg” and was fine.

“The policeman injured in the Khunmoh incident is absolutely stable. They exhibited extreme care and caution while repulsing the attack. No collateral damage. Area under cordon and search continues,” a police spokesperson said.

“The suspected area has been cordoned off by police and security forces and is being searched. As per recent update contact has been established, militants are hold up. Police has registered case under relevant sections and investigation is in progress,” a police press statement said.

The BJP is part of the ruling alliance led by the PDP of chief minister Mehboba Mufti.
