As part of the Pongal festivities in the region, the fox (vanga nari), which is under the scheduled list of endangered species, is caught and kept in a temple for a brief period. Residents of this village believe that looking at a fox on the temple premises would ensure good rains and prosperity. The Forest Department, which had banned the practice for a brief period in the past, however, permitted it later due to the villagers’ pressure. No harm would be done to the animal, as it will just be kept in the temple to allow people to take a look at it. It will be released unharmed later in the evening. (G.N.S) Dt. 17
