Foreign secretary, S Jaishankar, Navtej Sarna, Indian Ambassador to US, Vijay Keshav Gokhale, Secretary Economic Relations, MEA, Ministry of External Affairs
As Indianmandarins had reported first on December 19 senior diplomat Vijay Keshav Gokhale (IFS:1981) on Monday was appointed next Foreign Secretary (FS) for a two-year fixed term, succeeding S Jaishankar (IFS:1977) who will be completing his extended tenure on January 28. Currently Gokhale serves Secretary (Economic Relations) in the Ministry of External Affairs. Prior to this he served as India’s envoy to China.
It is reliably learnt that the outgoing FS Jaishankar will be given a critically important position post retirement which leaves wide avenue for speculations.
Jaishankar was appointed Foreign Secretary on January 29, 2015, for two years. He was given a one-year extension in January last year.
