Deputy Superintendent of police (DSP) Baljinder Singh Sandhu posted at Jaito in Faridkot shot himself with his service weapon at Punjabi University Regional Centre at Jaito on Monday afternoon.
DSP Sandhu (50) had gone at the regional centre to diffuse situation between two groups of students. When an altercation took place between the groups of students, the cop shot him at the temple. The cops accompanying the DSP rushed him to Guru Gobind Singh medical college Faridkot where he was declared brought dead.
Police is investigating as to what led the DSP to shot at self.
As per eyewitnesses, some activists of the Inqulabi naujawan vidyarthi manch led by Gurjinder Singh were holding a protest at the regional centre against the incident of police assaulting two students at Jaito bus stand few days ago. When they were holding protest, some other students came at the spot and tried to disrupt the protest. DSP Sandhu came in between and tried to separate both the groups. In a fraction of seconds he pulled his service revolver and shot at him.
The students were taken aback over the sudden incident and dispersed. Sources said the police is looking for the students at the forefront of the protest and those trying to prevent them from holding protest. A student on the condition of anonymity said that “we were holding protest against assault on students that some other students wanted to disrupt. DSP was mediating and suddenly he killed self. The police is looking from students at the forefront”.
Bathinda Zone Inspector General of Police(IG)MS Chhina said that as “the activists of inquilabi vidyarthi manch levelled charges on the police of favouring the students trying to disrupt their protest. Not able to tolerate it and the stress generated by the altercation, DSP shot him with his service revolver.”
Faidkot SSP Nanak Singh said that “police is verifying as to what led the DSP to shot at him with his service weapon. The police is verifying whether someone provoked him or was he under some stress. Any case will be registered after investigating the matter”.
