Congress president Sonia Gandhi announcing to pay for travels of migrant labourers has apparently stumped the government plans to charge money through the state government. The Congress tells that it is the responsibility of the government to facilitate their travel. The government has come up with its clarification immediately. State Congress unit will take care of the financial issue.

Hundreds of thousands of migrant labourers are languishing in different parts of the country and want to return to their families and now the government has started the process by charging fare. The government is accused of spending over Rs 100 crore on ‘Namaste Trump’ event in Ahmedabad on February 24, 2020, arranged free air travel for Indians stranded abroad, the rail ministry donated Rs 151 crore to the PM’s Corona fund but it does not have money for migrant workers at the hour of distress.

The Congress has been arguing that migrant labourers were barely given four-hour notice of the lockdown clearly denying the opportunity to return to their homes. The Congress is equating this with the tragedy of partition in 1947 when people had faced such hardship and millions died.

The issue of labourers is being raised by the Congress from the very outset of the lockdown and sought provisions for the safe and free rail travel of the migrant workers and labourers to their respective hometowns across the country. So the Congress has decided that its state units will bear the cost for the rail travel of every needy worker and migrant labourer and take necessary steps in this regard.

Congress treasurer Ahmed Patel has asked all the state units to mobilise all possible local resources as directed by Congress President. Pradesh Congress Committees have been asked to mobilise all possible local resources to help migrants purchase tickets to get back home.
