It was a day that started with Alastair Cook and it was a day that ended with him. The left-handed batsman displayed a resurgence of form by scoring his 33rd Test hundred on Day 2 in Melbourne. On the third day, as wickets continued to tumble on the other end, Cook remained calm and composed and kept scoring runs from the other end. During a crucial partnership with bowler Stuart Broad that took England’s lead over Australia’s more than 100 runs, Cook reached his 5th double hundred at MCG, his second against Australia in their turf. Broad supported him from the other end and scored his fifty in just 56 balls before getting out. Cook managed to reach 244 runs as England reached 491/9, leading Australia by 164 runs at stumps.
