Tamil Nadu govt orders for an investigation into Kurangani forest fire

Tamil Nadu government appointed senior bureaucrat Atulya Misra as an inquiry officer to probe the Kurangani forest fire in Bodi range of Theni district. The official will also probe trekking in fire-prone areas.
An order issued by environment and forests secretary Md Nasimuddin said the unfortunate incident of forest fire in Kottagudi reserved forest in Theni district on March 11 led to loss of several innocent lives. “The circumstances leading to this incident of forest fire, as well as trekking activity without proper permission from forest department in forest fire-prone area needs to be inquired into in detail, so as to enable the government to take further action,” the officer said.
Misra is secretary to the department of revenue and disaster management.
The terms of reference given to the inquiry officer include circumstances leading to the tragic incident and role and lapses on the part of the trekking organisers and forest officials, if any. Procedure established in the forest department for regulation/permission of trekking in reserved forest area will be reviewed.
The officer will have to submit recommendations to avoid such incidents/tragedies in forests. The inquiry will have to be completed and the report sent to the government within two months.
