As elections are nearing in Karnataka and three north eastern states, Congress held a brain storming session in New Delhi on Friday. The Congress has also expressed its concerns on the functioning of the Supreme Court, after four senior judges held a press conference earlier in the day.
Several top Congress leaders including former Law Minister Kapil Sibal, P. Chidamabaram, Manish Tewari, Salman Khurshid among those present.
The points that have been raised by the four judges are extremely important, says Rahul Gandhi.
“They have mentioned that there is a threat to democracy. They have also raised the Judge Loya issue.”
“The Supreme Court should investigate this at the highest level. This kind of things has never happened before,” he says.
Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala spells out the reason behind the press meet.
Observation made by the Honorable Judges in their press conference today is extremely disturbing, he says adding that Congress party is deeply perturbed by these developments.
Specifically the Honorable Judges have highlighted issued two issues:
1) the long silence of the government of India of the Memorandum of Procedures finalised by the Supreme Court
2) Asignment of cases selectively to the benches of their preference without any rational basis
