Men’s world number 1 tennis ace Roger Federer reached the quarter-finals of the BNP Paribas Open at the Indian Wells.

He beat Jeremy Chardy 7-5, 6-4 to comfortably progress in the tournament.

Women’s top player Simona Halep’s fine form continued as she reached the last four with a 6-4, 6-7, 6-3 win against Croatia’s Petra Martic.

Federer sealed his career’s fourth win against Chardy in five clashes. He had won seven titles in 2017 and this season he has continued in fine form by winning the Australian Open and a title in Rotterdam. His win record in 2018 is 15-0.

Japan’s young sensation Naomi Osaka has continued her fine run in beating the big guns.

She overcame fifth seed Karolina Pliskova 6-2, 6-3 to reach the semis and will next face Halep.

The world number 44 broke Pliskova’s serves six times in a 78-minute duel.

Meanwhile, Germany’s Angelique Kerber will be in action on Thursday in her quarters match.

Simona Halep is guaranteed to hold on to her world number 1 rank after second placed Caroline Wozniacki bowed out earlier. Having lost in the final of the 2018 Australian Open, Halep is unbeaten otherwise. She is eyeing her second WTA title this season.

In the men’s singles Round of 16 show, the likes of Juan Martin del Potro, Sam Querrey and Milos Raonic joined Federer in the quarter-finals.

6th seed Potro won in three sets to beat Leonardo Mayer 3-6, 7-6, 6-3.

Sam Querrey revelled in front of the home crowd to beat Feliciano Lopez 6-3, 6-4.

Milos Raonic progressed after receiving a bye.
