As per official reports received Gujarat on Friday reported 116 new cases of Covid-19 taking the total so far to 378, said health department officials. While 46 of the cases were reported in the morning, another 70 cases were confirmed during the day, taking the tally for April 10 to 116 positive patients.
According to officials, the spike was due to continued intensified surveillance and testing for the coronavirus in the 24 hotspots declared in Gujarat’s five major cities.
The highest number of cases—55—was reported in Ahmedabad, followed by 37 in Vadodara. Bharuch reported 7 news cases, Rajkot 5, Bhavnagar 4 and Surat 3. Two each were reported in Patan and Kutch while Gandhinagar reported one more case.
A 40-year-old man with kidney disease succumbed to Covid-19 in Ahmedabad and an 81-year-old man with hypertension and diabetes died in Gandhinagar. This took the death toll to 19 patients so far in Gujarat. Now Gujarat has a total of 378 positive cases where Ahmedabad has the maximum number of cases 197, followed by Vadodara 59, Surat 27, Bhavnagar 22, Rajkot 18, Gandhinagar and Patan 14 each, Bharuch 7, Kutch 4, Porbandar 3, Mehsana, Chotta Udepur and Gir-Somnath 2 each and Panchmahal, Jamnagar, Morbi, Sabarkantha, Dahod and Anand one each. Of the 326 patients admitted to various hospitals, three are on ventilator support.
“Once again we say that this is nothing to be worried about, as aggressive testing is been carried out and we were expecting a large number of positive cases coming out. The decision of going for intensive testing on a campaign mode was taken 4 days ago by the high-powered committee chaired by the Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani,” said Jayanti Ravi, principal secretary, Health and family welfare Department, Gujarat.
